Kisan Diwas – Farmers Day
“If agriculture goes wrong, nothing else will have a chance to go right.” M. S. Swaminathan.
This is so true, isn’t it? Everything we eat, and drink, has come our way because a farmer toiled under the hot sun to look after their precious crops. It is therefore fitting that we celebrate National Farmers Day today.
Kisan Diwas or Farmers Day is marked every year in India on December 23rd to celebrate the work that farmers do.
The historical significance of today is its link to Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India. He was known for his commitment to agricultural policies, and the introduction of the Farmers’ Welfare Bill.
Across the country, Kisan Diwas is celebrated with a variety of events such as workshops, seminars, and programmes aimed at information dissemination, and welfare measures.
We can do our bit too - let’s thank a farmer every single day, and even more so today!
